The costs of driver discomfort
Commercial drivers experience long hours and relentless road vibration. The continual assault on their bodies makes it more likely they will be hurt or fatigued — or look for another job.
In one group Atlas studied, 85% of drivers reported discomfort. Half reported shoulder pain, low back pain, and head and/or neck pain; and more than a third, knee and wrist/hand pain.
Consider that, on average, just one back or neck injury costs an employer $84,000 to $168,000 (direct and indirect costs), not including lost revenues caused by missing drivers.
Also, consider that annualized turnover in the trucking industry can average more than 100% — direly affecting recruiting and training costs, productivity and safety.
