OFFICE-BASED ERGONOMIC SYSTEM TO HELP 12,000 TRUCK DRIVERS
Green Bay, Wis. and Grand Haven, Mich.-June 13, 2005-Schneider National Inc., a premier provider of transportation, logistics and related services, is working with Atlas Ergonomics to provide in-cab health and safety improvements for more than 12,000 drivers. Known for its office ergonomic innovations, Atlas is now applying its proven methods for reducing discomfort, fatigue and turnover to Schneider trucks.
"Schneider places great emphasis on the safety and comfort of our drivers and the Atlas seating system ensures we maintain that focus," said Don Osterberg, vice president of Safety. "Drivers in our pilot study reported being less fatigued and more comfortable in trucks equipped with the Atlas Seat Marking System, and that spoke volumes."
"When we were first approached by Schneider about applying our office-focused system within the truck cab we were intrigued," said Drew Bossen, executive vice president of Atlas Ergonomics. "However, it soon became clear that the same physical dynamics at work in an office environment are in play in a truck, compounded by road vibration."
"In Schneider cabs," Bossen explained, "a full range of ergonomic adjustments is available. What's needed is a simple, sustainable way to unlock the potential of adjustments. Atlas fits the environment to the individual, trains the user how to maintain the individualized settings and monitors outcomes for quantified results."
In a pilot study of the Atlas system, according to Bossen, driver-reported discomfort dropped from 85 percent to 20 percent. More than 90 percent of drivers reported improvement in their fatigue level and job satisfaction.
"Implementing the Atlas process has become a high priority for our organization and we are anticipating significant, measurable benefits," notes Osterberg. "Implementation is underway, with all trucks slated for installation by mid-summer."
