The costs of driver discomfort
Public transit drivers experience unique back-related stress due to road vibration, uneven pavement, frequent turns, and the impact of pot holes. The continual assault on their bodies from driving makes it more likely that they will become fatigued and injured.
In large and small metropolitan systems alike, we have seen over 80% of the drivers report some level of discomfort, typically within the neck, shoulders, and lower back. Approximately 50% reported discomfort at a high or extreme level, which is a strong indicator of a potential injury.
If you consider that, on average, just one back or neck injury can cost an employer $84,000 to $168,000 (direct and indirect costs), this creates a compelling argument for a need for change.
